Front and back of the twenty words on this level you will meet most often in everyday Chinese, by wordfreq’s frequency count (an outside measure; the syllabus ranks none). The drill deals from all 1,000 words in random order, so your first round will be a different twenty.

How the HSK 4 deck works
Each card starts with the word in Chinese characters. Think of what it means, then tap the card or press space to turn it over: pinyin, part of speech and meaning, with a speaker button to hear it. Then say how it went, “I knew it” or “Not yet” (keys 2 and 1). The cards go one way only, from the Chinese to the meaning.
Behind the cards is a five-box Leitner schedule. A new card starts in the first box. Each “I knew it” moves it up one box, and each box waits longer before the card comes back. “Not yet” sends it back to the first box, wherever it was.
- Box 1Same round
- Box 21 day
- Box 33 days
- Box 41 week
- Box 53 weeks
A round is up to twenty cards. Cards that are due for review, at most twelve of them, are shuffled in with new words drawn at random from the level’s 1,000.
Without a paid plan, every level gives you twenty cards free, with no account: one pass through twenty new words. Once twenty cards from a level are in your deck, the drill on that level — new cards, repeats within a round and later reviews — is part of HSKWin Pro. A free account does not raise the limit.
The deck is kept in this browser, one per level. It is never saved to an account, with Pro or without, so it does not follow you to another device, and clearing this site’s data empties it.
Looking a word up is a different job: the full HSK 4 word list prints all 1,000 words with search, part-of-speech filters and audio, free to read.
Questions about the HSK 4 flashcards
Are the HSK 4 flashcards free?
Twenty cards on every level are free, with no account: one pass through twenty new words. After that, the drill on that level, reviews included, is part of HSKWin Pro, which opens all 1,000 cards. Signing up for a free account does not raise the limit. The HSK 4 word list stays free to read in full.
The HSK 4 word listWhere is my flashcard progress saved?
In this browser only, separately for each level. It is not stored on an account, with or without Pro, so it does not carry over to another browser or device, and clearing this site’s data empties the deck.
When does a card come back?
It depends on its box. A card you miss goes back to the first box and to the end of the round you are in. A card you know moves up one box and comes back after one day, then three days, a week and three weeks. Each round deals at most twelve due cards and fills the rest with new words; the free round is a single pass through twenty new ones.
Which words are in the HSK 4 deck?
The 1,000 words the HSK 3.0 exam syllabus adds at HSK 4, with the syllabus’s own pinyin and part of speech and an English meaning from CC-CEDICT. Words from the levels below are in their own decks.
