What is in an HSK 5 paper
The clock runs per section, as it does in the exam: each section opens with its own time limit, and once it closes you cannot go back to it. Every recording plays once.

What this section really tests
Thirty-five items, played once: ten conversations with one question each, then longer conversations and talks carrying two or three questions apiece. Past the first ten, you are listening for reasons and attitudes, not facts.
Listening, about 25 minutes, runs on the recording. On the shared talks, read all two or three questions before the audio starts.

What this section really tests
Thirty-five items. The cloze mixes words and clauses, so grammar has to fit as well as meaning; paragraph ordering is logic under time pressure; the last part is four long passages with three or four questions each.
Reading, 35 minutes for 35 questions. About 10 on the cloze, 8 on ordering (find the first paragraph, then the last), 17 on the long passages.

What this section really tests
Two essays. The picture sequence tests narrating in order with connectives; the topic essay tests taking a position and holding it for 200 characters. Both are marked against a rubric, not a word count.
Writing, 40 minutes. Fifteen for the picture essay, twenty for the topic essay, five to reread both.
An HSK 5 sitting under HSK 3.0 comes with a speaking test of about 23 minutes. You register for both together, and the speaking is sat separately from the written paper. The mock test on this page covers the written paper only. Score my speaking
How HSK 5 is scored
300marks in total · pass at 180, which is 60%
- Listening, 35 questionsabout 2.9 marks each, by key
- Reading, 35 questionsabout 2.9 marks each, by key
- Writing, 2 questionsmarked by AI against a rubric
- Each section is marked out of 100, so the paper is out of 300. You pass with 180, which is 60% of the total.
- Questions carry equal weight within a section: each listening question is worth about 2.9 marks and each reading question is worth about 2.9 marks.
- Writing is marked against a rubric rather than an answer key. CTI does not publish how much each task is worth, so the weighting between tasks is ours.
- Listening and reading are scored the moment you submit. Writing is marked by AI, usually within a few minutes, with every deduction pointed out and a rewrite to compare against.

The two sections you can’t grade yourself
Listening and reading have an answer key. Writing and speaking don’t, and they’re where most people lose the exam.
Is this HSK 5 paper based on the current HSK 3.0 syllabus?
Yes. It follows the HSK 3.0 exam syllabus CTI published for levels 1–9, in force from July 2026, and the HSK 5 structure in CTI’s official sample paper: 72 questions across listening, reading and writing, about 110 minutes, marked out of 300. Before a paper goes live, every word in it is checked against the syllabus list for this level and below.
What it cannot promise is which version your own sitting will be. CTI has not announced when regular HSK 1–6 sittings switch from 2.0 to 3.0, so an HSK 5 sitting in 2026 may still be the old paper. Check the version on your registration record: if it says 3.0, or your exam falls after the switch, this is the paper to practise on. If it says 2.0, most of the vocabulary carries over but the question types and timing do not. HSK 3.0 status tracker

How HSK 3.0 Level 5 differs from the old HSK 5
Read Chinese newspapers and magazines, follow films, and give a full speech.
| Item | Old HSK 5 (2.0) | HSK 3.0 Level 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | 100 | 72 |
| Time | 2 h 5 min | 1 h 50 min |
| Sections | Listening, reading, writing | Listening, reading and writing |
| Words | 2,500 | 4,316 |
| Total / pass | 300 / 180 | 300 / 180 |
| Speaking | HSKK, a separate exam | Registered together, sat separately, about 23 min |
- Down from 100 questions to 72: listening 45 → 35, reading 45 → 35, writing 10 → 2.
- Reading part 1 is passage cloze where a gap can take a word or a whole clause; part 2 is putting five paragraphs in order, one question per position.
- Writing is two essays: at least 100 characters on a four-picture sequence, and at least 200 on a topic. The old sentence-ordering items and the 80-character essay are gone.
- The word target rises from 2,500 to 4,316, and the sitting runs about 110 minutes instead of 125.
HSK 5 questions, answered
How long is the HSK 5 exam?+
About 110 minutes, including the time to fill in your details: listening about 25, reading 35 and writing 40 minutes. The speaking test is sat separately and takes about 23 minutes more.
How many questions are on HSK 5?+
72 questions: 35 listening, 35 reading and 2 writing.
What score do I need to pass HSK 5?+
180 out of 300, which is 60% of the total. Each section is marked out of 100.
Is it free to use?+
Previewing any paper — up to three questions from each section, with the answer and explanation — is free and needs no account. Sitting the whole paper on the clock, scored and marked, is part of a paid plan.
See plansCan I sit the same paper twice?+
Yes. Sitting a paper again starts a fresh attempt and uses one sitting from your plan. Going back to a sitting you left unfinished does not.
Does it include the HSK 5 speaking test?+
No. Under HSK 3.0 the 23-minute speaking test is registered with the written exam but sat separately, so the papers here cover the written exam. Speaking can be practised and scored on its own.
Score my speakingAre these official past papers?+
No. CTI has not released any HSK 3.0 past papers, so these are practice papers written to the 3.0 syllabus and to the structure of CTI’s official sample paper.
