What this section really tests

Thirty items, each played twice. Part 1 matches a conversation to a picture; parts 2 and 3 add a spoken question after a conversation or a short talk, with three printed answers. The talks in part 3 are where the level is decided — they reward following an argument, not catching one word.

Listening, about 23 minutes, runs on the recording. Each item plays twice: answer on the first pass, confirm on the second, and spend the gap before the next item reading its options.

What this section really tests

Thirty items: pick the right reply to a sentence, fill gaps from a word bank, then read short passages and answer questions on them. The passages pair two questions with one text, so reading it properly once is faster than skimming it twice.

Reading, 30 minutes for 30 questions. Budget 8 minutes for the replies, 8 for the word-bank gaps and 14 for the passages — the passages carry the most words per mark.

What this section really tests

Ten items. Five ask you to write a character from its pinyin inside a sentence; five give you a picture and one word and ask for a sentence built around both. This is the only section of the paper where nothing is multiple choice, and the only one marked against a rubric rather than a key.

Writing, 20 minutes for 10 items. Allow about 1 minute per pinyin item and 2–3 per picture sentence, then 2 minutes to reread for measure words and 了 / 过.

  • Each section is marked out of 100, so the paper is out of 300. You pass with 180, which is 60% of the total.
  • Questions carry equal weight within a section: each listening question is worth about 3.3 marks and each reading question is worth about 3.3 marks.
  • Writing is marked against a rubric rather than an answer key. CTI does not publish how much each task is worth, so the weighting between tasks is ours.
  • Listening and reading are scored the moment you submit. Writing is marked by AI, usually within a few minutes, with every deduction pointed out and a rewrite to compare against.

Is this HSK 3 paper based on the current HSK 3.0 syllabus?

Yes. It follows the HSK 3.0 exam syllabus CTI published for levels 1–9, in force from July 2026, and the HSK 3 structure in CTI’s official sample paper: 70 questions across listening, reading and writing, about 83 minutes, marked out of 300. Before a paper goes live, every word in it is checked against the syllabus list for this level and below.

What it cannot promise is which version your own sitting will be. CTI has not announced when regular HSK 1–6 sittings switch from 2.0 to 3.0, so an HSK 3 sitting in 2026 may still be the old paper. Check the version on your registration record: if it says 3.0, or your exam falls after the switch, this is the paper to practise on. If it says 2.0, most of the vocabulary carries over but the question types and timing do not. HSK 3.0 status tracker

  • Down from 80 questions to 70: listening loses its fourth part and goes from 40 questions to 30.
  • Listening part 2 used to be true-or-false on a short passage. It is now a conversation and a question with three answers to choose from.
  • Writing is rebuilt. Putting scattered words into a sentence is gone; writing characters from pinyin moves to part 1, and part 2 is a picture plus a given word that you turn into a sentence of your own.
  • The word target jumps from 600 to 2,245, and the sitting runs about 83 minutes instead of 90.

About 83 minutes, including the time to fill in your details: listening about 23, reading 30 and writing 20 minutes. The speaking test is sat separately and takes about 15 minutes more.

How many questions are on HSK 3?+

70 questions: 30 listening, 30 reading and 10 writing.

What score do I need to pass HSK 3?+

180 out of 300, which is 60% of the total. Each section is marked out of 100.

Is it free to use?+

Previewing any paper — up to three questions from each section, with the answer and explanation — is free and needs no account. Sitting the whole paper on the clock, scored and marked, is part of a paid plan.

Can I sit the same paper twice?+

Yes. Sitting a paper again starts a fresh attempt and uses one sitting from your plan. Going back to a sitting you left unfinished does not.

Does it include the HSK 3 speaking test?+

No. Under HSK 3.0 the 15-minute speaking test is registered with the written exam but sat separately, so the papers here cover the written exam. Speaking can be practised and scored on its own.

No. CTI has not released any HSK 3.0 past papers, so these are practice papers written to the 3.0 syllabus and to the structure of CTI’s official sample paper.
