What is in an HSK 1 paper
The clock runs per section, as it does in the exam: each section opens with its own time limit, and once it closes you cannot go back to it. Every recording plays twice.

What this section really tests
Twenty items, each played twice. You are matching sound to meaning at the simplest scale — a phrase to a picture, a question to its answer, a two-line exchange to a scene — so what is tested is whether you catch numbers, times, people and everyday objects at natural speed.
Listening runs on the recording. Use the gap before each item to look at the three pictures, so you are listening for a difference rather than for everything.

What this section really tests
Twenty items in twenty minutes. The four parts climb from recognising a word in a picture to understanding a whole sentence well enough to answer a question about it, and the gap-fill is where tone-alike characters get mixed up. The question-and-reply matching is a bank of six for five gaps, so it rewards knowing which answers a question word expects: 几 wants a number, 哪儿 a place, 什么时候 a time.
Reading is a minute a question. Do the picture and reply matching first — they are quickest — and leave two or three minutes for the ★ sentences at the end.
How HSK 1 is scored
200marks in total · pass at 120, which is 60%
- Listening, 20 questionsabout 5.0 marks each, by key
- Reading, 20 questionsabout 5.0 marks each, by key
- Each section is marked out of 100, so the paper is out of 200. You pass with 120, which is 60% of the total.
- Questions carry equal weight within a section: each listening question is worth about 5.0 marks and each reading question is worth about 5.0 marks.
- Everything on this paper has an answer key, so your whole result is ready the moment you submit.
Already have your section scores? Add them up in the HSK score calculator to see how far your total is from the pass mark.
The two sections you can’t grade yourself
Listening and reading have an answer key. Writing and speaking don’t, and they’re where most people lose the exam.
Is this HSK 1 paper based on the current HSK 3.0 syllabus?
Yes. It follows the HSK 3.0 exam syllabus CTI published for levels 1–9, in force from July 2026, and the HSK 1 structure in CTI’s official sample paper: 40 questions across listening and reading, about 40 minutes, marked out of 200. Before a paper goes live, every word in it is checked against the syllabus list for this level and below.
What it cannot promise is which version your own sitting will be. CTI has not announced when regular HSK 1–6 sittings switch from 2.0 to 3.0, so an HSK 1 sitting in 2026 may still be the old paper. Check the version on your registration record: if it says 3.0, or your exam falls after the switch, this is the paper to practise on. If it says 2.0, most of the vocabulary carries over but the question types and timing do not. HSK 3.0 status tracker

How HSK 3.0 Level 1 differs from the old HSK 1
Handle greetings, numbers, dates and the simplest daily exchanges.
| Item | Old HSK 1 (2.0) | HSK 3.0 Level 1 |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | 40 | 40 |
| Time | 40 min | 40 min |
| Sections | Listening, reading | Listening and reading |
| Words | 150 | 500 |
| Total / pass | 200 / 120 | 200 / 120 |
- Still 40 questions, 20 listening and 20 reading — but every true-or-false item is gone.
- Listening part 1 is now a spoken phrase and three pictures; part 2 is a spoken question and three printed replies to choose from.
- Reading runs in four parts: match a sentence to a picture, match a question to its reply, fill a gap from a word bank, and answer a ★ question about a sentence.
- The word target rises from 150 to 500, so the vocabulary behind the same 40 questions is more than three times wider.
- The pass mark does not move: 120 out of 200, with listening and reading each marked out of 100. What makes 120 harder to reach is the wider word list, not the scoring.
HSK 1 questions, answered
How long is the HSK 1 exam?+

How many questions are on HSK 1?+
40 questions: 20 listening and 20 reading.
What score do I need to pass HSK 1?+
120 out of 200, which is 60% of the total. Each section is marked out of 100.
Is it free to use?+
Previewing any paper — up to three questions from each section, with the answer and explanation — is free and needs no account. Sitting the whole paper on the clock, scored and marked, is part of a paid plan.
See plansCan I sit the same paper twice?+
Yes. Sitting a paper again starts a fresh attempt and uses one sitting from your plan. Going back to a sitting you left unfinished does not.
Are these official past papers?+
No. CTI has not released any HSK 3.0 past papers, so these are practice papers written to the 3.0 syllabus and to the structure of CTI’s official sample paper.
