What this section really tests
Five tasks: respond to a printed scenario, answer questions on a recording, and give a view on a stated question, each with timed preparation.
Speaking, about 24 minutes, runs on its own timer for each task. Use all the preparation time — notes are allowed.

- Each section is marked out of 100, so the paper is out of 500. There is no pass line: the result places you at level 7, 8 or 9.
- Questions carry equal weight within a section: each listening question is worth about 2.5 marks and each reading question is worth about 2.1 marks.
- Writing, translation and speaking are marked against a rubric rather than an answer key. CTI does not publish how much each task is worth, so the weighting between tasks is ours.
- Listening and reading are scored the moment you submit. Writing, translation and speaking are marked by AI, usually within a few minutes, with every deduction pointed out and a rewrite to compare against.

The two sections you can’t grade yourself
Listening and reading have an answer key. Writing and speaking don’t, and they’re where most people lose the exam.
Is this HSK 7–9 paper based on the current HSK 3.0 syllabus?
Yes. It follows the HSK 3.0 exam syllabus CTI published for levels 1–9, in force from July 2026, and the HSK 7–9 structure in CTI’s official sample paper: 98 questions across listening, reading, writing, translation and speaking, about 210 minutes, marked out of 500. Before a paper goes live, every word in it is checked against the syllabus list for this level and below.
HSK 7–9 has only ever been a 3.0 exam, and it is the one part of HSK 3.0 already being sat, so there is no older version to mix it up with. HSK 3.0 status tracker

Work, research or teach in Chinese. One computer-based paper, graded into bands 7, 8 or 9.
- There was no HSK 7–9 under 2.0 — the old exam stopped at HSK 6. Levels 7, 8 and 9 are one paper, sat once, and the result places you in a band.
- Five sections instead of three: translation and speaking are added to listening, reading and writing.
- 98 questions over about 210 minutes, out of 500, with no pass line — the band comes from an ability estimate, not a raw cut-off.
- Unlike levels 1–6, HSK 7–9 is already examined under HSK 3.0 today.

About 210 minutes, including the time to fill in your details: listening about 30, reading 60, writing 55, translation 41 and speaking about 24 minutes.
How many questions are on HSK 7–9?+
98 questions: 40 listening, 47 reading, 2 writing, 4 translation and 5 speaking.
What score do I need to pass HSK 7–9?+
There is no pass mark. The paper is out of 500, and your result places you at level 7, 8 or 9.
Is it free to use?+
Previewing any paper — up to three questions from each section, with the answer and explanation — is free and needs no account. Sitting the whole paper on the clock, scored and marked, is part of a paid plan.

Yes. Sitting a paper again starts a fresh attempt and uses one sitting from your plan. Going back to a sitting you left unfinished does not.
Does it include the speaking section?+
Yes. Speaking is one of the five sections of the 7–9 paper and is sat in the same session. Your answers are transcribed and marked against a rubric; the recording is not kept.
Are these official past papers?+
No. CTI has not released any HSK 3.0 past papers, so these are practice papers written to the 3.0 syllabus and to the structure of CTI’s official sample paper.
